The son of a teacher and union truck driver, he shares our working family values and knows what it means to make ends meet on Long Island. His passion for public service led him to receive a bachelor’s degree in political science from SUNY Albany, where he gained valuable experience working in the New York State Assembly. Returning home to his roots, Josh has dedicated himself to his community, helping others and fighting for workers. He **worked for former Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning, where he fought for us as her Chief of Staff for twelve years**. Since 2018, he has been a union member with Laborers Local 66, **serving as the Long Island Political Director advocating for union construction workers and good-paying careers.** While serving in the legislature, he was at the forefront of improving our quality of life focusing on illegal, substandard housing and crime. Josh **helped preserve over 1000 acres of open space** to protect our water quality and vital natural resources. He successfully fought for sewer infrastructure and **helped secure $200 million to construct what became our community’s first ever sewer district**, creating hundreds of union jobs and improving water quality for the Forge River. **As a labor leader, he worked with local schools to create the first union high school pre-apprenticeship program in New York State**, guaranteeing a pipeline of Long Island workers and good paying careers for our youth. He helped pass Project Labor Agreement requirements for all construction on SUNY campuses in New York State, **ensuring local union workers benefit from taxpayer-funded construction** and secured OSHA-30 safety training requirements on large construction projects across Long Island's towns to create safer worksites for all workers. His decades of experience advocating on the behalf of taxpayers and workers will ensure working families can afford to live and thrive on Long Island. ## Donate today and help us flip this seat! ## We need your help to spread Josh's message! Furthermore, I’ll work to increase state jobs programs to put Long Islanders to work repairing our crumbling infrastructure. I have also fought for and successfully secured state legislation that **requires SUNY campus construction to use local workers,** **creating thousands of jobs that were previously going to out-of-state workers.** I helped **create the Long Island First Policy for the Suffolk County IDA** that requires projects to source local materials, use local vendors and use local workers. This increases economic activity for small businesses and ensures our tax dollars are creating local jobs. ###### healthcare, prescription drugs **Driving down costs and taking on corporate middlemen** No one should be penalized for working hard or face a lifetime of debt just for getting sick. Here’s my plan: - **Expand the Essential Plan**: Over 450,000 New Yorkers lost coverage via the Essential Plan – the state’s $0 premium/deductible health plan – due to federal funding cuts. Not only do I want to restore coverage to those who had it, but I want to expand eligibility so more working families can get affordable coverage. - **Cap Out-of-Pocket Costs**: I support instituting a statewide cap on daily out-of-pocket hospital expenses for seniors and lower-income families. - **Take on Corporate Middlemen (PBMs)**: We need to lower prescription drug costs by taking on the corporate middlemen that are Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs). I supports legislation to: - **Ban insurance-side PBMs from owning or operating their own pharmacies**, thereby preventing monopolies like Aetna-owned CVS - **Prohibit PBMs from underpaying local independent pharmacies** below actual drug acquisition costs. ###### childcare **Ensuring working families can afford high-quality care** My wife and I are expecting our first child later this year, so childcare costs have been top of mind for us. **I support expanding affordable childcare to make high-quality childcare accessible for working families.** That means hiring more childcare workers, ensuring better pay and working conditions for staff, and increasing the number of childcare sites across the state. **How do we pay for it? By ensuring the super wealthy and biggest corporations finally pay their fair share** by closing corporate tax loopholes and increasing the tax rate for those making over $5 million a year. ###### Transportation, infrastructure **Bringing home the investments our district needs** **Over the course of my 12 years as a Chief of Staff in local government,** I’ve helped secure hundreds of millions of dollars to improve our local infrastructure, like **securing $200 million for the Forge River sewer district project**, cleaning up water quality while creating hundreds of local union jobs. **In Albany, I’ll use that experience and my position in the majority to bring home the infrastructure dollars our district desperately needs**. Some specific local infrastructure projects I’ll prioritize include: - Creating an over-/under-pass at the William Floyd Parkway railroad crossing in Shirley, and adding railroad crossings at key locations to reduce traffic congestion in the area - Revitalizing the Rt. 112 corridor in Medford - Increased LIRR service to/from Mastic-Shirley and Bellport train stations - Increasing Sunrise Highway from two to three lanes from Station Road east to Wading River road. - Building a south service road along Sunrise Highway from Shirley to Moriches. - Repaving and improving maintenance on Route 25/Middle Country Rd. in Middle Island/Ridge. ###### home & auto insurance **Stopping premium hikes & predatory practices** The cost of essentials like home and auto insurance are going through the roof, with insurance companies putting profits over people. In Albany, I’ll fight to hold them accountable and stop predatory premium hikes. Here’s how: - **Capping Insurer Profits:** I support a state check on insurer profitability. If a carrier has outsized profit margins two years in a row, the state should have the authority to pull back their rates. - **Mandatory Discounts:** I’ll push for automatic state budget discounts for homeowners who weatherproof or upgrade property safety. - **Outlawing Discrimination:** Banning insurance companies from charging higher rates based on zip codes and credit scores. - **Cutting Red Tape in Flooding Assistance:** I’ll fight for direct state grant distribution to help our South Shore neighbors (especially East Patchogue, Mastic Beach, Bellport) lift their homes and improve drainage without waiting forever for federal reimbursements. - **Cracking Down on Fraud:** NY is second in the nation for staged crashes, costing drivers on average an extra $300/year. I support cracking down on insurance fraud by empowering law enforcement and giving prosecutors the power to seek stiff criminal penalties for organized scams. - **Incentivizing Safety:** I support requiring insurance companies to offer discounts on premiums to incentivize safe driving. ###### Warehouses, Data centers, A.I. **Putting people over corporate profits** **Massive warehouses are popping up left and right across our district,** cutting down ever-shrinking green spaces, increasing traffic and pollution, and deteriorating our quality of life. Increasingly, these massive developments **include A.I. data centers which serve only to increase big tech profits while exploiting our energy grid and water**, exacerbating an ever-worsening affordability crisis. **Unlike our current Assemblyman who voted against a state-wide Data Center moratorium,** I support the moratorium on large-scale data center construction while studying the energy and water usage from existing Data centers that are already operating in New York State. **Furthermore, I support clawing back the tax breaks and eliminating future ones for these massive developments.** Where Josh stands on the major issues impacting our community, and what he'll fight for in Albany, in his own words. ###### sign up ## Join our mailing list --- ## Issues: Your issue title here URL: https://www.joshslaughter.com/issues/issue-2 ###### your name believes in Your issue page text here Write a little something about your issue here.
